Race Night November 2010

Race NightWhat do you get if you put a pig on the screen, a potato on a plate and a group of friends around a table? The answer? An evening filled with fun, laughter and lots of cash raised on the side.

The NEHRA Social evening held in October was the first of what I hope to be an annual event, giving friends, family and neighbours the chance to meet in the familiar surroundings of the Village Hall

Race NightWe'd also arranged a selection of horse and pig races to bring a bit of fun and something different to the evening. Everyone soon got in the swing of it by either becoming the owner of one of our fine fillies or placing a 1 on one of the cleverly named competitors to win. Luckily I'd found an odds spreadsheet on the internet or we'd have taken ages to work them out!

During the break, baked spuds, sausages, cheese, beans and salad were expertly served up by Alyson, Jim, Simon and Maddie.

Race NightWe were also lucky enough to have Northney Ice-cream donated by Tim for dessert.

Soon the second half of the races got underway, with people queuing to place their 1's or to snap up the chance to become one of our final few owners and win one of our prizes donated by local businesses or residents. The full list of the final winners is below.

Race NiteAfter all the expenses and payouts (and some people certainly did win more than they spent) I'm delighted to say that we raised in the region of 650 for the associations coffers. This is far more than I ever expected; the enthusiasm in which everyone joined in totally amazed me and all of the helpers.

Many, many thanks go to all of our Race Sponsors, all whom gave us their prizes for free.

Race Nite Many thanks also go to:-

  • Ken Grainger for the audio visual equipment and playing the races
  • Tim Pike for supplying Northney Ice-cream
  • Mike Treadwell for being 'the man on the mic on the night' and giving us the benefit of his usual wit and charm
  • Alyson and Jim Griffin, Simon Minns and Maddie Treadwell for preparing and serving the excellent cuisine
  • Rachel and Anna for being excellent 'Tote Girlies'
  • The genius who invented the odds spreadsheet and popped it on the internet
  • Everyone who joined in without being there by becoming an owner before the event
  • And Finally all the 70 or so people who came on the night and joined in with great gusto making the evening a success. We couldn't have do it without you!
