2024 Survey

After the flooding in April 2024 NEHRA conducted a survey of Northney and Tye residents. The results were analysed and reported to the appropriate authorities to ensure they recognised the impact of the flooding on the community.

2017 Coastal Path

In 2016 the association created a fully detailed and funded plan for a Coastal Path along Northney Road between The Langstone Hotel and the bridge. This would have re-instated the bund wall to it’s original height and avoided the frequent flooding of the road in addition to providing a footpath. A revised proposal Planning Application 17/00817 for the footpath was submitted in 2017. Unfortunately, NEHRA were unable to meet a Natural England condition and preventing the scheme from proceeding.

2014 Ditch survey

Over the years we have informed and consulted with local authorities and agencies information regarding flooding of the land by the sea and surface water and in the process recognise the government’s shift of responsibility to the landowners. In 2014 we conducted a survey of the state of repair of local ditches and tidal flaps and communicated our findings to the respective land owners.

2009 Seawall maintenance

In the summer of 2009 the Association assisted Northney Farm over a number of weekends to repair the sea wall at Northney Marshes, adjacent to the permissive coastal path. The project was lead by Judy Clark our Association Planning Secretary. Jonathan Simm, a coastal engineer who has worked on similar community projects provided construction advice and guided the work. The necessary approvals were obtained from the Environment Agency and Natural England to carry out repairs with the proviso the works were complete before the return of over wintering birds in October.

This project was considered a success on a number of levels. A long run of seawall was repaired that would most likely breached that winter saving the fields for grazing cattle. In addition the sea did not flood the fields: saving the reservoir area for surface water to drain from the roads and the village and protecting both from flooding.
